Camp Akita Cell Phone Policy

One of the greatest benefits of summer camp is the opportunity to disconnect from technology and reconnect to the camp community. In past years, we have encouraged campers to turn off cell phones and store them in their bags while at camp. Unfortunately, we have seen an increase in campers using their cell phones inappropriately. For camper safety and full-camp security, the following policies are in place related to cell phone usage at Camp Akita..

  • Cell phones are not permitted at Camp Akita. Any phone or device that connects to cell service is not permitted, even for use as a camera or musical device. If campers want to take photos or listen to music, they may bring other devices such as mp3 players or disposable cameras.
  • Any device that is disruptive will be confiscated. Please leave devices such as cell phones, tablets, video games, or other technology at home. Any device that causes a disruption to camp programming will be confiscated, kept in the camp office, and returned for the bus ride home.
  • LIFE Guard cell phones will be collected. LIFE Guards will be required to turn in cell phones upon arrival. Cell phones will be kept in the camp office and returned for the bus ride home.
  • Medical exceptions. The only exception to this rule is for campers who rely on cell phones or other devices for medical purposes, such as campers with diabetes. These campers and their families will work with camp staff to create a plan for appropriate use prior to arrival.

Preparing Your Child for Camp

Many campers are accustomed to using their cell phones to stay in contact with friends and family at all times. Before camp begins, talk to your camper about our policy. Encourage them to reach out to Counselors with their needs instead of turning to their cell phone.

Here is some language that might be helpful to practice prior to camp:

  • Tell your Counselor how you feel. “I’m feeling [sad, worried, sick, hurt] right now. Usually I would tell my [mom, dad, grandma] when I feel this way at home.” Your Counselor will take you seriously and help create a plan.

  • Answer questions honestly. Your Counselor might ask some questions to get a better idea of how you’re feeling and what might help you feel better. Be sure to answer honestly so they can get you the help you need!.

  • Staff will call home if needed for 'non-urgent' situations. Akita staff will always call when there is an emergency. Remind your camper that we do not allow campers to call home; when they do, we can see a dramatic increase in stress, anxiety, and even panic. If needed, Camp Akita staff will call home to speak with parents/caregivers. In the meantime, we’ll try everything we can to help campers feel safe and supported!
