Two half-days + 1 day trip to Akita
1,2,3...Akita! provides faith based summer fun and an outdoor adventure for children who will be going into the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade in the fall of 2012. The first two days are spent at the North Campus in Columbus, exploring ideas about God through play, song, activites, and craft. On the third day, all the children are transported by buses to Camp Akita in Logan, Ohio, for a day of hiking, swimming, crafts, and games led by Camp Akita counselors. This year's camp will be held July 31 - August 2, 2012. Contact

We have two overnight camp options for our 3rd and 4th graders. We understand that some children are ready for a full 2 night camp experience while others may be more comfortable with a shorter one night sleepover. Children attending these camps will experience the sheer joy of games at the far field, as well as an introduction into what Camp Akita has to offer, including arts and crafts, slip n'slides, singing camp songs, and other faith-based activities that will help nurture their faith development. This experience is designed to give our youngest overnight campers the chance to have the time of their lives, make friendships that will last for years to come, and help them fall in love with camp . . . while gaining confidence away from home.

Children will be able to swim in the lake, make crafts, and play games. We will introduce age appropriate discussions of faith and campers will start to form meaningful relationships with counselors and other campers. We will also introduce these campers to the Adventure Complex for the first time. We will spend our days with organized "free time" and end each night with songs and a camp fire. These campers will be able to make arts and crafts, use the Wet Willie water slides, and enjoy milk shakes from our shake shop. We hope that by the end of the session these kids will have grown comfortable at Akita, grown in their faith, and want to come back again and again.

The program for these sessions helps ensure a positive experience at camp while introducing age-appropriate discussions of faith. Children attending these camps can expect play time at the lake, sliding down the Wet Willy water slides, creative expression in the Craft Cabin, hikes in the woods, and all the fun and laughter that comes with the Akita-exclusive mealtime characters. These camps will introduce 5th and 6th graders to our full range of group games on our athletic fields, choice based free time, and small group time for age appropriate faith discussions. Typical bedtime for these sessions is 10:30 p.m. with wake-up at 8:00 a.m. for morning devotions. New this year we are keeping the 5th and 6th graders together since they will have been in the same schools the previous year.

One of our last camp sessions of the summer we like to invite campers to come back for a second Akita experience as well as welcome new campers who were unable to attend earlier in the summer. This session will be unlike any other this summer, as we explore a whole new program theme and offer once in a lifetime opportunities. We will continue to offer everything from our previous sessions, but we will add all new experiences. Some of the things we have done in the past are night hikes to a bonfire, cardboard boat races, coed lip syncs, and our very own version of tag played in the woods at sunset. We will continue to build relationships with small group discussions and explore our faith in new and exciting ways.

These sessions are the ideal camp experience for middle school students. We have kept the 7th and 8th graders together this year since they have just completed a year together in the same school. The Akita message of unconditional love is ideally suited for the sometimes chaotic middle school life. Aside from all the standard Akita activities, these sessions include an added element in the form of group games, programs, and adventure. All 7th and 8th graders will be invited into increasingly mature discussions of faith and spirituality. With slightly longer days lasting until 11:00 p.m., these campers will be ushered through six days of fun and meaningful experiences, including their first chance to experience the Giant Swing and the Adventure Complex. These campers will benefit from small group discussions and an added emphasis on discussions of faith.

Adding to everything offered at the younger camp sessions, 8th and 9th graders will have the experience of a full adventure program including mountain bikes, the giant swing, and climbing the Alpine Tower. In addition to these afternoon activities, we introduce these campers to live music Camp Akita style with "Prime-Time" in the lodge with Rick Shaw and the Makeshifts. Free time in the afternoon is longer with all of our Camp Akita activities open. Students will be able to explore the nature cabin, make arts and crafts, play at the lake, ride the Wet Willie water slides, and explore the grounds with hikes. Through small groups of cabin mates and new friends we enable deeper faith-based discussions and experiences. We have added an extra night to this camp this year so that we can build stronger relationships, have more fun, and explore more of what Camp Akita has to offer.

For the past several years we have wondered how to create a new and improved high school camp experience. We experimented with blending camp and L.I.F.E. Guard, changing the schedule, and adding activities we’ve never tried. After a couple of years, a lot of brainstorming, and gathering feedback from campers, counselors, and staff, we think we’ve finally done it!
Here’s just a taste of this summer’s High School Camp, Session 1. We’ve taken the best aspects of L.I.F.E. Guard, like journal time and a family-group environment, combined with the best of summer camp, like high-energy games and plenty of free time. We’ve added a whole new section of the day where campers can choose to learn new skills such as yoga, archery, cooking, art, and nature education, led by experts who love Akita as much as you. Of course, we have kept all the traditions you love, like visits to Bald Eagle, our world-class staff, and messages that will surely challenge you to take new steps along your faith journey. Overall, we have flipped the entire schedule; imagine ending each evening by candlelight on Vesper Hill. Session 1 will be Akita like you have never seen it before, and a week you will never forget.

L.I.F.E. Guard
L.I.F.E. Guard is an opportunity available for high school student leaders (going into 10th-12th, plus 2012 Senior Graduates) looking for a service-based faith experience at Akita. The acronym L.I.F.E., for "Last Is First Enteral" (Matthew 19:30), is a reminder of the spirit behind the work performed by this group.
A crew of high school students devote two camp sessions to serving the camp, campers, and God. By doing much of the behind-the-scenes work that enables camp to run so smoothly for the campers, the participants learn how to give of themselves without seeking any credit or praise. The "Guard Experience" is the next step in the pursuit of a deeper understanding of their faith.
